Call Out Details:
A school party of 13, including 2 adults, climbed Helevllyn in winter conditions, in ordinary shoes, with no crampons or ice axes and precious little experience. Understandably, they got into difficulties on the descent, and one pupil lost his footing, and slid 80-100 feet on hard packed snow, suffering injuries to his hand, breaking his nose and suffering facial injuries. Keswick team attended the incident, and it was then discovered that one of the children had been so traumatised by what he had seen, that he had run away down the hill towards the forest.
Call Out Conclusion:
The Team's searchdogs were deployed to search for the child along with other team members, whilst the original casualty was treated and the other children recovered. The misper turned up close to the road, and was found by police officers attending the incident. The original casualty and the rest of the party was brought down to safety by the Team, using crampons and cutting steps to assist the descent.
